Rhode Island Resources

In 2023, Rhode Island passed 2023-S 0103Aaa which allows pharmacists to prescribe and dispense all short-term, FDA-approved hormonal contraceptives (pill, patch, ring, shot, LNG EC). The initial legislation included a 3 month limit on pharmacist-prescribed contraceptive prescriptions., but in 2025 that requirement was removed so pharmacists can prescribe up to a year of contraceptives.

Below you will find links to board of pharmacy regulations, relevant laws, and resources to prepare you to offer contraceptive services in your pharmacy.

Training

RI Pharmacists must complete educational training approved by the state board of pharmacy that is related to prescribing hormonal contraceptives and counseling on all methods of FDA-approved contraceptives, including those the pharmacist is not able to prescribe. A training program has not yet been approved by the Board of Pharmacy.

If you would like more training on contraception methods, you can take our General Pharmacist Contraception Services Training Program. This program includes background, review of all methods, contraception service procedures, patient education, service implementation, resources for both pharmacists and patients, and opportunities for advocacy and providing services.
