Oregon Resources

In Oregon, trained pharmacists may prescribe hormonal contraception (pill, patch, ring, and shot) to patients of any age. Oregon was the first state to implement its statewide protocol for pharmacist prescribing of hormonal contraception. Oregon’s legislation originally passed in 2015, and was initially limited to oral and transdermal contraceptives. However, in 2017 the Legislature passed a second bill to broaden the term of “self-administered hormonal contraceptives” to also include the injection and vaginal ring.  Pharmacists in Oregon are also able to be reimbursed for services provided within their lawful scope of practice, which includes hormonal contraception.

Training

Pharmacists in Oregon must complete a training program approved by the State Board of Pharmacy that is related to the prescribing of contraceptives by a pharmacist.  You can find Board approved programs at this link: Board Approved Training Programs.

If you would like additional training on contraception methods, you can take our General Pharmacist Contraception Services Training Program. This program includes background, review of methods, contraception service procedures, patient education, service implementation, resources for both pharmacists and patients, and opportunities for advocacy and providing services.
