Minnesota Resources
Minnesota pharmacists are authorized to prescribe self-administered hormonal contraceptives (pill, patch, and ring) via statewide protocol to patients 18 and older, or under 18 if the patient has evidence of a prior prescription, since 2020.
Below you will find links to board of pharmacy and statewide protocol materials and training to prepare you to offer contraceptive services in your pharmacy.
Training
General Pharmacist Contraception Services Training Program
Pharmacists in Minnesota must “complete a training program on prescribing contraceptives that is offered by a college of pharmacy or by a continuing education provider that is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, or a program approved by the board.” Our General Pharmacist Contraception Services Training Program is ACPE-accredited and fulfills this requirement. This program includes background, review of methods, contraception service procedures, patient education, service implementation, resources for both pharmacists and patients, and opportunities for advocacy and providing services.

We're building a state-based network of pharmacist leaders to expand access to contraception and build momentum for pharmacy-based reproductive health services. Your State Champion serves as a local resource and advocate within the Birth Control Pharmacist Community.
