On May 23, 2022, Governor McMaster signed into law Act 210 which allows pharmacists to dispense a self-administered hormonal contraceptive or administer an injectable hormonal contraceptive without a patient-specific written order. Pursuant to the Act, the Board of Medical Examiners and the Board of Pharmacy have issued joint written protocols regarding the dispensing of birth control by pharmacists.
Update: as of May 22, 2026, the Board of Medical Examiners and the Board of Pharmacy have issued a joint written protocol, so pharmacists in South Carolina may prescribe under their own name using the protocol.

South Carolina Pharmacist Contraception Services Training Program
This home study training program created in partnership with the South Carolina Pharmacy Association is accepted by the South Carolina Board of Pharmacy as required training for pharmacists to prescribe hormonal contraception (pills, patch, ring, shot) pursuant to the joint protocol.
