In partnership with the the New York State Council of Health-system Pharmacists (NYSCHP), this home study training program is being presented to prepare New York pharmacists to provide contraception care under the standing order approved on March 19, 2024. This program includes background, review of menstrual cycle phases and hormone functions, birth control methods, protocol procedures, patient education, service implementation, resources for both pharmacists and patients, and dispensing authorities in New York.

This training includes instruction in the following as required by the commissioner:

  • Knowledge of the menstrual cycle, including the different menstrual cycle phases and hormonal functions;
  • Knowledge of the various contraceptive methods, medications and devices, including both self-administered and non-self-administered contraceptives and devices. Such overview shall also include the pharmacology and mechanisms of actions for the various contraceptives and devices available on the market;
  • Knowledge of the precautions and contraindications in the use of hormonal contraceptives; and
  • Knowledge of the various techniques required to counsel and adequately screen patients for the dispensing of an appropriate self-administered hormonal contraceptive if applicable.
  • Earn up to 2 contact hours (0.2 CEUs) of ACPE-accredited continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credit.

Learning Objectives

Upon completing this course, the participant will be able to:

Pharmacists

  • Discuss the impact of barriers to contraceptive use.
  • Describe pharmacist procedures for contraception services.
  • Identify appropriate screening assessments for the various methods of contraception.
  • Apply the medical eligibility criteria for contraceptive use to individual patients.
  • Provide accurate patient counseling about the mechanism, effectiveness, benefits, risks, and instructions for use for contraception methods.
  • Assist patients in selecting method(s) of contraception.
  • Manage side effects and refer for further evaluation when appropriate.
  • Implement contraception prescribing in a pharmacy practice setting.
