New York Resources

New York pharmacists can directly dispense hormonal contraception (pills, patches, and vaginal rings) under a statewide standing order to patients of all ages, in addition to emergency contraception, since 2024. Pharmacist prescribing of contraception is an important clinical service for your local community.

The patient’s copay for birth control is the same, regardless of whether the prescription is from a pharmacist, physician, or other provider type. NYRx, New York’s Medicaid program, even provides payment for this pharmacist service. In addition, issuing a prescription for emergency contraception allows you to bill the patient’s insurance and eliminate patient out-of-pocket costs.

Below you will find links to board of pharmacy and standing order materials, an implementation toolkit, and training to prepare you to offer contraceptive services in your pharmacy.
