Tennessee Resources
Tennessee pharmacists have independent prescriptive authority for specific medications, including progesterone-only hormonal contraceptives (progestin-only pill and shot). Additionally, pharmacists may prescribe hormonal contraceptives pursuant to a valid collaborate practice agreement executed by an authorized prescriber.
Training
Pharmacists providing progesterone-only hormonal contraceptives via independent prescriptive authority in Tennessee are not required to take additional training.
Pharmacists providing hormonal contraceptives pursuant to a collaborative practice agreement must complete a training program pertaining to the prescribing of hormonal contraceptives and approved by the Tennessee Department of Health. A list of training programs approved by the Tennessee Department of Health can be found here.
If you would like more training on contraception methods, you can take our General Pharmacist Contraception Services Training Program. This program includes background, review of methods, contraception service procedures, patient education, service implementation, resources for both pharmacists and patients, and opportunities for advocacy and providing services.
