Illinois Resources
Pharmacists in Illinois may dispense contraceptives, including emergency contraception (pill, patch, ring, shot, emergency contraception, and nonhormonal methods) via statewide standing order to patients of all ages.
In 2025, HB3489 was passed which amends the Pharmacy Practice Act and provides that “practice of pharmacy” includes the assessment and consultation of patients and dispensing of contraceptives, including emergency contraception. Effective on January 1, 2026, this broadens Illinois pharmacist dispensation scope from hormonal contraceptives to all contraceptives, including emergency contraceptives and nonhormonal methods.
Below you will find links to board of pharmacy materials, training requirements, and other resources to prepare you to offer contraceptive services in your pharmacy.
