Connecticut Resources

Connecticut pharmacists can directly prescribe hormonal contraception (pills, patches, vaginal rings, and depot injections) to patients of all ages, in addition to emergency contraception, since 2024. Pharmacist prescribing of contraception is an important clinical service for your local community.

The patient’s copay for birth control is the same, regardless of whether the prescription is from a pharmacist, physician, or other provider type. In addition, issuing a prescription for emergency contraception allows you to bill the patient’s insurance and eliminate patient out-of-pocket costs.

Below you will find links to board of pharmacy and standing order materials, implementation assistance, and training to prepare you to offer contraceptive services in your pharmacy.

Training

Connecticut Pharmacist Contraception Services Training Program

This home study training program is approved by the Connecticut Commission of Pharmacy as required training for pharmacists in Connecticut to prescribe hormonal contraceptives. This program includes background, review of methods, protocol procedures, patient education, service implementation, resources for both pharmacists and patients, and payment for pharmacist services.
