About this Course
This home study training program is approved by the Utah Board of Pharmacy as required training for pharmacists to dispense hormonal contraception (pills, patch, ring) per statewide standing order. This program includes background, review of methods, standing order procedures, patient education, service implementation, resources for both pharmacists and patients, and payment for pharmacist services.
Earn up to 3 contact hours (0.3 CEUs) of ACPE-accredited continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credit.
If you are a pharmacist in another state, contact us for the appropriate course accepted by your state board of pharmacy.

Learning Objectives
Upon completing this course, the participant will be able to:
Pharmacists
- Discuss the scope and impact of unintended pregnancy and barriers to contraceptive use.

Describe pharmacist procedures for prescribing and dispensing contraception, including state-specific requirements.

Identify appropriate screening assessments for the various methods of contraception.

Apply the medical eligibility criteria for contraceptive use and algorithm to individual patients.

Provide accurate patient counseling about the mechanism, effectiveness, side effects, and instructions for use for contraception methods including self-administered hormonal and non-hormonal contraception, as well as emergency contraception.

Assist patients in selecting method(s) of contraception.

Manage side effects of contraceptive medications and refer for further evaluation when appropriate.

Outline a plan to implement contraceptive prescribing in a pharmacy practice setting.
